There are many cheap fish tanks you can buy online, we have scrubbed the internet to make this summary of the best cheap fish tanks to help you choose the best one for your aquarium setup.

Cheap fish tank #1: Aqua Culture 10 Gallon Empty Aquarium - $23.40

Material: Glass
Seal: Silicone
Dimensions: 20″ (51cm) length, 12″ (30.48cm) height, 10″ (25.4cm) width.
Capacity: 10 gallons (37.85 litres)
Amazon Reviews: Mostly 5 star reviews. Positive reviews compliment the fast delivery time, the neatness of the plastic seal and the overall versatile build. There isn’t much that can go wrong in a well built rectangular glass fish tank. Negative reviews talk about damage during delivery – this is a rare event which is the fault of the shipping company, a refund is always provided in cases like this.

The Aqua Culture 10 Gallon Empty Aquarium is less than 2 feet long, this is the perfect aquarium if you only have a small space but want to keep a sizable aquarium. The cuboid design allows for maximum utilization of space. This cheap fish tank has a classic glass design with black plastic to seal off the sharp edges and corners to prevent injury. At $23.40 including delivery, this aquarium provides extremely good value for the price due to its comparatively large size. 10 gallons will allow you to keep around a dozen small-medium sized fish, all you need to do is buy a separate filter and LED light.

(Note: There are many other versions of this fish tank on Amazon, such as the “Aqueon Aquarium Fish Tank Size 10” which costs $2 more, these tanks are probably made in the same factory, just buy the cheapest version with good reviews.)

Cheap Fish Tank #2: AquaScene 1-gallon Fish Tank with LED Lighting and Natural Biological Filtration - $25.37

Cheap fish tank #2

Material: Impact resistant plastic
Seal: One-piece Aquarium
Dimensions:10.5″ (27 cm) Length x 7.5″ (19 cm) Width x 10.25″ (26cm)Height
Capacity: 1 gallon (3.8 litres)
Amazon Reviews: The reviews are generally good (5 stars and 4 stars) but with a smaller amount of 1, 2 & 3 star reviews. The good reviews praise the tank’s compactness and cheap price. Its rare to find a tank with so many functions built into a compact space at only $25. The negative reviews criticize the small size of the tank, this tank is only enough to keep a few very small fish or a single Betta fish, if you want to keep an enormous fish tank with bustling aquatic life – this fish tank is not for you.

  • LED Lights with 7 different colors (daylight white, blue, green, amber, aqua, purple, red)
  • Built in LED Timer, you can set the lights to turn on and off automatically.
  • This aquarium is made from a single piece of plastic meaning there has been no glue used to join together separate pieces, greatly reducing the risk of leakage.
  • Biological Filtration is used to draw water through the bacteria on gravel to remove impurities.
  • Uses either x3 AAA batteries or powered by a USB connection (to your computer or a charging port). You can buy a specialized power adapter which allows you to connect the fish tank directly to your power outlet but it will be much easier and cheaper to just buy a power adapter with a USB plug.
Overall, this is a small and cheap fish tank of high quality with built in filtration and lighting. It is rare to find a well-built all-in-one fish tank at a low price, this fish tank is well worth the money. Keep in mind, although this tank is perfect  for keeping a few smaller fish or a single medium sized fish, this is a very small aquarium which is not suitable for a larger aquatic ecosystem.

Cheap fish tank #3: Aqueon LED MiniBow Aquarium Starter Kit With LED Lighting - $26.09

Material: Impact resistant plastic
Seal: One-piece Aquarium
Dimensions: 8.9″ (22.6cm) Height x 6.6″ (16.7cm) Width x 9.8″ (24.9cm) Length
Capacity: 1 gallon (3.8 litres) – (other capacities also available)

The Aqueon LED MiniBow is very similar previous Aquascene LED fish tank. Both of these fish tanks are made from a single piece of durable, shock absorbent high quality plastic so breakage will be a smaller concern. However, keep in mind that although plastic is harder to break than glass, it is more likely to be scratched so be careful when putting in gravel or handling sharp objects around these fish tanks.

Unlike the Aquascene LED, this aquarium doesn’t have an automatic timer meaning that you will have to switch the lights manually.

Reading the user manual for this aquarium, a piece of valuable advice is offered: always have a drip loop in your aquarium cables to prevent water from reaching the power outlet.

Its easier to match the Aqueon aquarium with the aesthetics of its environment as it features a more contemporary design with traditionally colored black base and lid, unlike the flashier Aquascene with its completely transparent plastic design. This fish tank comes with an elevated base which helps to separate the temperature of the fish tank from the surface its placed on.

The Aqueon LED Minibow is cheap fish tank made from one-piece plastic with a 1 gallon capacity. Its built in filter system and LED lights makes the setup very convenient although you will have to manually adjust the lights. This tank is perfect for keeping a single medium-large sized fish such as Betta fish or a few smaller fish.

Cheap fish tank #4: Tetra LED Cube Shaped 3 Gallon Aquarium with Pedestal Base - $26.24

Material: Impact resistant plastic
Seal: One-piece Aquarium
Dimensions: 10″ (22.6cm) Length x 10″ (25.4cm) Widthx 10.5″ (26.7cm) height
Capacity: 3 gallons (11.4 litres)

The tetra LED Cube provides a very sleek and stylish modern fish-tank design that would fit in very well in a trendy yuppie apartment. The design is a perfect, space saving 3 gallon cube which is symmetrically fixed onto a dark platform. The LED light fixture extends above the roof without disturbing the perfect cuboid shape while also balancing out the dark fixture at the bottom too.

Like the previous 2 tanks, the Tetra LED cube shaped 3 gallon aquarium comes with a LED light and filter – the basic accessories needed in every fish tank to keep your fish visible and water clean. With a price of $26, this fish tank is almost identical in price compared to the other fish tanks but much larger in size – allowing you to keep a greater option of fish and accessories.

The reviews of this fish tank are overwhelming positive, many reviews claim that it is a good setup for a single betta fish. The LED Light fixture has also received positive reviews, the 9 individual bulbs always come fully functional and are evenly distributed which helps to provide an illuminating shine to your fish tank. There is also a small cutout space at the back of the tank which easily fits an aftermarket filter if you believe this one is insufficient (some reviews claim that the pump and filter is insufficient and too loud in this fish tank, it may be worth an additional investment of around $10 to buy an additional pump).

To conclude, the Tetra LED Cube shaped 3 gallon fish tank provides a very good size with the price point. It has a very sleek and elegant design which will serve as a great modernistic ornament to any surface you place it on, its large capacity provides you with a greater choice on quantity and type of fish to keep as well as increased space to place ornaments.

Cheap fish tank #5: AquaView 6.5 Gallon Fish tank with Power filter and LED Lighting - $36.98

Material: Impact resistant plastic
Seal: One-piece Aquarium
Dimensions: 18″ (45.72cm) length x 11″ (27.94cm) width x 13.5″ (34.3cm) height
Capacity: 6.5 gallons (26.6 litres)

By now we are starting to see a trend – these fish tanks are all made of one piece shock-resistant plastic with a built in LED light and filter, this one is no exception. Like the aqua-scene 1 gallon fish tank, the AquaView comes with 7 dazzling color choices (white, blue, green, amber, purple, red) to brightly illuminate your fish.

The seller claims that the filter is quiet and cleans as much as 45 gallons per hour and removes organic pollutants effectively. Reading through the Amazon reviews, some users tend to agree that the filter is quiet and performs its job very well whereas others suggest that you buy a new filter. Although the risk of buying faulty equipment still exists, its safe to say that the majority of buyers enjoy this cheap fish tank with no problems.

Conclusion

Cheap fish tanks in the $20 – $50 dollar range either come as a single stand alone plain glass tank or a small, one piece plastic enclosure with built in LED lights and filters.

Although the price point is similar, the fish tanks have vastly different appearances (rectangular, cuboid, pentagonal), sizes (1 gallon, 3 gallon, 6.5 gallon, 10 gallon), LED types (single color, multi color, manual switch, automatic timer) and reviews on Amazon, ranging from “this is the perfect tank, filter is perfect for several months, my fish love it” to “this tank is terrible, came cracked, filter doesn’t work, light broke after 2 minutes, all my fish died”.

If you are feeling optimistic and would like the convenience of a pre-installed cheap fish tank setup complete with LED light, filter and tank – go ahead and select from one of the many pre-made fish tank kits.

If you would like to go with the safer option – purchase the Aqua Culture 10 Gallon Empty Aquarium – for $23.40 and spend some additional money (around $15 to $30) on tried and tested fish tank filters which will last a long time.
